How can we lose weight without dieting? Impossible? I don’t think so. I come from generations of overweight people, even my ancestors in old black and white photos look a little fat to me, and that was before fast food outlets. I’ve been living with this problem for years but I finally have my body under control. No, I’m not someone you’d notice at the pool or on the beach, but I do get around without huffing and puffing, and can do a few push-ups without my belly hitting the ground before my chest. One day while sitting in my chair, sick of my flabbiness and disgusted with my laziness, I read an article about how eliminating processed foods from our diets can significantly reduce health problems, and help us lose weight.
Wow, here was something worth doing that would be really easy, no special diet plan or exercise program to feel guilty about if I didn’t follow through. I mentioned the article to my wife, and we decided to cut out processed foods and whenever possible, buy organic vegetables and meat. Though we were actually trying to reduce our chemical intake, by buying fresh food, we also simultaneously cut out the salt and sugar processed foods are full of, without consciously trying to do so. Now it’s well known that salt causes fluid retention as well as blood pressure problems and sugars(that aren’t used up), eventually turn into fat.
So, consequently, we eliminated a huge source of our weight problem automatically, though we still were eating basically the same meals we always had. Fresh food tastes better, though I must say, I think all food tastes great, processed or not, but knowing the chemicals are not included, psychologically is a good feeling. Little did I know that there were all ready millions of people well aware of this information and there was even a well known ‘diet’ that had been around since the 1950′s, preaching ‘eat fresh.’ I’m not a promoter of this diet, I didn’t go through it with the drops(hcg) and all, but the food information is there. It is exciting and simple, and it works. Here’s a short video about what I’m talking about.
The Process Costs Nothing
Now I’m sure that cutting out the processed foods will make you feel better, and help you lose some weight, but if you are on this site, you want to lose more then ‘some’ weight. Remember however, changing your food buying and eating habits is where you need to start and that weight loss is a long term project. It can take a long time to get rid of the excess fats your body has stored up, in fact, a nice slow weight loss program is a lot healthier than a crash-course-anorexic-bulimic-starvation diet plan. There are things you can do to speed up the process, in fact, things your doctor would recommend.
First off, eat some breakfast. Experts all agree that a high fiber breakfast will help you feel full longer into the day, (and reduce the urge for snacking!). Try some oatmeal and see if it works.
Try not to eat between meals. If you go to work everyday, it’s easier, just don’t eat until lunch time, and if you’re bound to a desk, make sure you get rid of the hidden snacks in the drawers. To get me through until lunch, I have a pack of Breathsavers on hand, at first, they were gone by lunch, now, one pack may last all week. Or try chewing gum, anything to keep you from eating. People who are home all day will have a tougher time, my advice, when you finish your chores, get out of the house and do something other then eat and watch tv.
When it is meal time, don’t eat until you’re completely stuffed. Kathy Griffin says, “You know why I’m so thin? It’s because I’m constantly hungry.” I’m not one to feel constantly hungry, and I had to overcome one of my oldest childhood memories where I was told to, “Clean your plate!” My point being, portion size counts, calorie intake counts, all these tips we’ve had shoved down our throats forever count. Just eat until your satisfied, not until you’re ready to burst.
Here is where it gets hard, and only the truly determined will venture further, but the best advice I can offer to my fellow travelers is to start an exercise program. I know, I groaned every time somebody would say it, but it doesn’t have to be a full out 10K run every day to make a huge difference to your body. Start out with some stretching, and slowly work up to the hard stuff. Remember, if you are really overweight, your heart needs to get in shape too, so take it easy for the first month or so.
Eventually you’ll be treadmilling, or jogging, or walking with the arm weights, or doing jumping jacks and sit ups, or swimming, or playing frisbee. You’ll see, once you start, and some progress is made, you will become excited and the exercises won’t be a chore, you will miss it when you don’t have a chance to work out. One of the best tips I have for working out is to get yourself a partner. Misery loves company right? If you have children, you’re in luck, you’ll have a partner whether you want one or not.
Kids love to play(work out) with their parents. If mom or dad is on the floor they’re in heaven and can’t wait to get down there with them. For a child, a walk or bike ride around the block is a blast. No kids and nobody willing to work out with you? Download a workout video and watch it on your computer, or buy an exercise CD for the tv room. In every town there are gyms, most with sign up offers that are easily affordable.
There you will meet like minded people and you will find yourself inspired to work out even harder, longer and more often, that’s when the pounds will really melt off. If you want some nice short work outs to start with, there are a few video’s on this site that will help you get going and you can do in the privacy of your own home.
By simply starting out this weight loss procedure buying non-processed food, your days of feeling bloated will end. If nothing else, the lack of chemical intake will be better for your health, and even if you are satisfied with your weight, it is something you should consider doing anyway. Nowadays, most grocery stores have deli sections with non-processed foods, my wife buys my lunch meat and cheese there, freshly sliced.
The sandwiches are great even without the chemicals I grew up with, and the slight extra cost and inconvenience is worth it. By changing your food buying habits, once you’ve naturally lost some weight and because your intake of sugar and salt has been reduced, you won’t gain anything back, so you will have broken the cycle of diet and weight gain.
The older we get, the harder the weight loss process becomes, but even then it is worth pursuing. To avoid all the health issues being overweight can cause, (diabetes, foot problems, back aches, heart disease, you name it and being fat can cause it), please try this out, it costs nothing. I refuse to call this process a ‘Diet,’ I like to refer to it as ‘Natural Weight Loss,’ thus my title, you can “Lose Weight Without Dieting.”
